Ask The Pet Relocation Expert

Q. My husband is getting a job in Iraq as a contractor for the Department of Defense. We have a shitzu-poodle mix, under 10 pounds, and we would like to take her with us. Is that possible? I am not sure if the contractor, Midwest, has different rules for dogs or if they follow the general guidelines for the host country. -- Amy S.

A. Hi Amy,

Moving pets to Iraq can be fairly simple, as long as you obtain the necessary health requirements in advance. Dogs entering Iraq will need:

  • Import Permit obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture
  • Health Certificate dated within 10 days of the flight
  • Rabies vaccination (must be given more than 30 days prior to departure but within the last year)
  • Microchip (recommended)

It would be best to either work with a professional pet relocation company in obtaining the necessary permits, or talk with your husband's contractors to see if they have contacts who can obtain the necessary permits and clearance for your dog in advance.

Thanks!
Rachel

Q. Hello, I was wondering what I need to get for my dog to travel with me to Germany? We are going only to visit for 10 days. I hear conflicting information as to what she needs. She has a microchip already that has 15 digits, does she need an additional chip? She received a rabies shot exactly 30 days prior to travel, and when does the form ANNEX II form need to be filled out? I hear a lot of conflicting information and I'm trying to get everything in place for a safe, easy travel.

Thanks,
Jeannine
