Q. Hello, I am trying to help a friend get reliable information on bringing her adopted dog from Uganda back to her home country of Germany. She will be leaving in just a few weeks. Can you please tell me what are the quarantine and other restrictions for a dog from Uganda into Germany. Thanks! -- Laura S.
A. Hello Laura! In order for your friend to get her dog into Germany, there is a multi-step process that needs to be followed in this order (and if she completes these requirements, there will not be any quarantine time):
1. Microchip, then
2. Rabies Vaccination - then wait for 30 days, then
3. Blood sample taken by an official veterinarian at least 30 days after vaccination and 3 months before traveling
4. Blood test result from an EU-approved laboratory showing that the rabies antibody titre was equal to or more than 0.5IU/ml (Onderstepoort in Pretoria has been approved). See link.
5. All this needs to be accompanied by a health certificate issued by an official veterinarian certifying compliance with the above requirements and counter signed by the government approved vet.
Identification:
The dog needs to be identified by an electronic identification system (transponder), or by a clearly readable tattoo. The tattoo, as a means of identification, will only be accepted during an eight-year transitional period. The microchip must be of ISO Standard 11784 or ISO Standard 11785.
Please note that each EU country has its own health certificate.
Hope this information helps, and if you, or your friend, has any more questions or need further clarification, our EU Specialist, Matt, would be happy to help. His email address is mathews[at]petrelocation[dot]com.

Q. Hi, I'm moving back to the US with my husband and dog next week. I'm worried because I haven't found a veterinarian who has and can insert an ID chip in Tunisia. What are the rules for traveling from Tunisia to US with a stopover in Rome? Do I still need the ID chip or not? -- Vivian N.

Ask the Vet
Q. My mouse had an abcess in his eye; it was stuck out and the eyelid didn't close over it. I took it to the vet and they gave him some respitory track medicine (didn't even treat the eye) but I suppose all antibiotics are the same for mice. Anyways, two weeks later, the mouse is blind I believe from that side. The eye is back in the eye socket from what I can see, but there is a clear discharge all the time. The eyeball is not clear; in fact it looks deflated if that is possible? The antibiotics are done in two days; what do I do? Will he be ok or do I need to give him more antibiotics? Enrofloxacin was given, and vitamino, nothing topical. Enucleation obviously is not an option since a mouse may not live the anesthetic. Please help! -- Chrissy A., Orleans, ON Canada
