Ask The Pet Relocation Expert

Q. Do you know the best most low cost way for me to transfer a cat from Malaga to London? I've heard that certain airlines allow pets to travel as hand luggage if they are less than 10kg. I would prefer him to be hand luggage rather than in the hold or to go with an expensive door to door vehicle courier. From what I have been told the best way is to use a certain airline from Malaga to Paris - and then take the Eurostar as there are different rules for flying pets straight into Britain as it's outside Schengen countries. Do you know which airlines are airline friendly within Europe for small pet travel. He is all up to date with passport, jabs and microchip.

Q. Hi. I am from the States but am down in Paraguay on a mission trip for a month. I will be coming home in early November. This is my first time on a trip like this, and the amount of stray dogs is very disconcerting. Outside of our house, there is a crippled dog that was apparently hit by a car and can only walk on three of her legs. I fed her a granola bar through the gate and, even though she was just skin and bones and obviously starving, she was so gentle. After she had finished the food, I got up and was on my way back inside, and she started whining... being a dog owner, already having 2 dogs, hearing this broke my heart so I let her in. The next day we bathed her and bought her dog food. A couple days later, much to our surprise, she had a puppy. About 15 minutes later, our landlord came for the first time and was appalled that we let her inside. He put her back on the street and killed her puppy! I was devastated... I sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. Even writing to you now, it is making me cry. I have talked to my parents back in the US, and we all want to bring her home with us. But, I obviously know nothing about how to do this. I am flying on TAM Airlines to Brazil and then on Continental Airlines the rest of the journey. I have looked up their policy on traveling with pets and TAM airlines states, the pet "must have proper vaccinations and documentation"... but what specifically do I need? Any help you can offer me would be greatly appreciated. Sincere thanks, -- Erin

Is it possible to exercise dogs during stopover? I was thinking of flying with Delta as they seem to be one of the few airlines that permit dogs in the cabin and fly to Manchester England with only one stop over. So the question is could we exercise the dogs during a 6 hour stopover in Atlanta. I see the crate you recommend is 10" high that is OK, but the 8' high on continental would be in my opinion too low for our dogs. (We are in France at the moment and our dogs are in Mexico) Our problem is that my wife has just been diagnosed with serious medical problems and we are told she shoulld return to live in England SAP. We had retired to Mexico. If we have to crate our dogs for the hold what happens about relieving themselves during say a 17 hour flight? I believe there are airlines specialising in pet transport. I have searched and searched but seemed to have only run into dead ends. She has 2 African Grey parrots she desperately wants to take with her and will do anything she can to ensure their travel be safe. Unfortunately I don't know where to begin looking to find the rules and regulations with traveling internationally with birds. Some websites say birds are prohibited but then mentioned only chickens and fowl of that sort. Some sites mentioned traveling with quarantines and permits but do not mention how long and in what conditions they would be kept and in all honesty I'm a little weary of how they would be cared for. Especially birds that stress out fairly easy. If you company provides some services for her situation I would great appreciate any info you may have, or if not could you point me in whichever direction I may need to go to find out what she has to do. Q. Hi there - not sure if I am in the right place to ask this question or not.... We are currently living in Panama and are going to be moving back to the United States (Florida). We have a cat and want to bring him with us. I am confused about the paperwork that is required. I can get a health certificate from our vet in panama - but does it need to be authenticated at the US Embassy in Panama prior to going the US? Will our cat be in quarantine when we get to the US? I would appreciate any help you might be able to provide. I have read many conflicting things on the internet - and I would like to know exactly what I need so there aren't any surprises once we arrive in Miami! Thank you, -- Sue

Q. Hi, I'm going to be attending grad school in Miami. I'm currently living in Germany and would like some info for my dog. I know that if the temperature outside the airport of destination is over 85F, my dog will not be allowed to go on the flight. If this is the case, do you know of good companies that can ship my dog from the airport in Hamburg to the one in Miami? I don't have much money either, so but I love my dog and need him to be with me.

Q. Hello, I am desperate and was hoping you could give me some answers. My husband and I are moving back to Calgary, Canada next year in summer 2012, and I want to take our 2-year-old cat with us. What do I need to get for the cat to be able to enter the country, and about how much will it cost me? He is under 5kg, so would my cat be traveling with me under my seat, or as cargo? Do I need to get my cat also a passport, or is the health vaccination enough? Please advise, I really want our cat to come with us, he was a rescue cat (a little kitten found on the streets of Beirut in Lebanon), and I won't leave him behind. Thanks, -- Trisha, Beirut, Lebanon

I am concerned that flying about 29 hours over three flights will be too stressful for her, but we are moving there for five years, and don't want to leave her here. What do you think? Have you had much experience transporting rabbits this distance? She has flown an hour and a half before nationally and was fine (except scared), and she doesn't really like car rides but has been on quite a few of them.

Q. I am in the preliminary stages of considering doing a college student exchange to France next year for one, maybe two, semesters. I do not want to leave my Beagle behind for that long, as I really don't have anyone reliable to leave him with. In fact, whether or not I can take him will determine if I pursue this any further. Q. I am moving back to the UK in a couple of weeks and would like my dog to join me. Since the law is changing in January we have decided to leave Fulo and prepare her to travel in the beginning of January. My husband was either going to wait to travel with her then or come back and pick her up. However, it seems that to enter the UK she has to be sent as unaccompanied manifest cargo regardless of whether we travel with her or not. I would like to know if I have any other options. Since taking her as special baggage to other parts of Europe apparently costs around $250, while sending her as cargo is around $1500. Add to that the cost of the crate, and all the fees for bureaucracy and you're talking thousands of dollars. We are not very well-off and I would like to make this a less costly process if possible.

Thanks,
Lia

Q. We are looking at the option of moving to Dubai for three years with my fiance's company job opportunity, and my biggest concern that would make me not want to go would be that our pets would be uncomfortable to do the move. How long would we have to to be in quarantine here in SA and in Dubai?

As our one female, the older one, always tends to get sick if we place them in a cattery when we go away, we have now had to get a sitter at our home to look after them and then she's fine.

Thanks,
Des

Q. I am concerned about moving my dog to China. What does the process entail and will she need to be quarantined? If so, what is the process and how long is it?

She is not particularly good with other animals or people outside my family. She has never bitten anyone, but the potential is there. I am really conflicted on what to do about this situation, because we have to relocate and cannot leave her with anyone here in the US. She also suffers from anxiety when she's away from us for too long.

Q. Just to make things complicated we want to bring most of our pets with us when we move to Canada in about 18 months (planning way way ahead). Are you able to tell me how much this is likely to cost us? Also, it is my understanding that while cats are fairly easy to import, ferrets need an import certificate - is this correct? If we use a pet travel service, do they organise the import permits? Could the ferrets all travel in one container to lower the associated costs and to limit stress on them? They are all friendly with each other apart from the occasional overzealous play fight. We love them :)

Q. Are there alternatives to traveling by air with my dog to France? If not, do any airlines exist which would allow me to bring my 65 pound dog on board with me rather than stow her in the luggage compartment? I am moving to do my doctorate in France. My golden doodle is very sensitive and gets anxious easily. For this reason, I am wondering whether it is possible to travel with her on board with me or via ship? I've heard horror stories about air travel and would prefer to forego this opportunity than to put her through anything that would be traumatic for her.

I'm having a hard time getting the exact details and prices for moving my cats from Canada to Taiwan. What do I need to bring my cats with me, and how much is this going to cost? Would going with a professional pet relocation company be too extravagant and unnecessary (could I arrange everything myself)? Or would it really be worth the money and make things more convenient for me and the kitties? I'm aware there is a 21 day quarantine, and I'm not sure how my cats will deal with that (or how I will deal with it!).
